INFORMATION BULLETIN 251 PEX-AL-PEX Materials and Gas Service Requests

CPS Energy has issued a notice regarding safety concerns about the use of flexible tubing materials known as PEX-AL-PEX and PE-AL-PE in indoor fuel gas piping systems. These multilayer materials, made of polyethylene and aluminum, have recently come under increased review by the propane and natural gas industries. Questions have been raised about whether the products meet certain safety requirements, including the ability to withstand elevated temperatures and maintain proper electrical bonding as required under National Fire Protection Association standard NFPA 54. Because these materials are not currently recognized by NFPA as approved fuel gas piping materials, CPS Energy has stated it will not knowingly connect its gas distribution system to piping systems using PEX-AL-PEX or PE-AL-PE. The utility noted this decision is being made out of an abundance of caution to prioritize public safety and may be reevaluated if the materials are shown to meet applicable industry standards in
